Please bring your own water bottle, drinks, snacks, etc. Lunch will be generously provided by Helena Chemical Company. 8:30 am - 9:20 am - Introduction to Invasives Instructor: Meg Brew, MS UF/IFAS Extension Lake County, Livestock Agent and County Extension DirectorThis fifty-minute session will cover the basics of what makes a species invasive, explain the environmental and economic impact of invasive species in the State of Florida, provide an overview of some of the common terminology used to discuss the management of invasive species, and include a discussion of what legal responsibilities land managers have when it comes to reporting, controlling, and transporting invasive species. 9:30 am - 10:20 am - The Process Pesticides Go Through and How It Translates into Label Language Instructor: Dr. Mike Scharf UF/IFAS Entomology and Nematology, Endowed Professor in Urban EntomologyIn this session participants will learn about the process that a pesticide undergoes to get from the lab to the store shelf. The discussion will include safety and efficacy testing, and how to properly read a pesticide label. 10:40 am - 11:30 am - Invasive Woody Plants: Identification and Control Instructor: Dr. Stephen Enloe UF/IFAS Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, Professor and Invasive Plant Extension SpecialistThis session will address the identification and control of woody plants with a special focus on herbicide application techniques like hack-and-squirt and basal bark application. Participants will learn to select the most appropriate application method for the species and setting and to apply herbicides in a safe and effective manner so as to prevent regrowth of invasive woody plants. 11:40 am - 12:30 pm - Cogongrass Biology and Control Instructor: Dr. Stephen Enloe UF/IFAS Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, Professor and Invasive Plant Extension SpecialistThis session will focus on identification of highly invasive cogongrass. Special attention will be paid to control options for cogongrass and other grassy invasive species and steps that land managers should take to avoid spreading these species when mowing right-of-ways, landscapes, and natural areas . 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm LUNCH Oakwood Smokehouse provided by Helena Chemical Company. Thank you Helena! 1:30 pm - 2:20 pm - Invasive Vines: Identification and Control Instructor: Meg Brew, MS UF/IFAS Extension Lake County, Livestock Agent and County Extension DirectorThis session will cover the identification and control on of invasive vines common to Central Florida. Participants will learn to correctly identify species and to select the most appropriate control method for the species and location. 2:40 - 3:30 - Backpack Sprayer Calibration Instructor: Brooke Moffis, MS UF/IFAS Extension Lake County, Commercial Horticulture and Florida-Friendly Landscaping Extension AgentParticipants will learn how to correctly calibrate backpack spray equipment to apply the correct amount of herbicide over a given area. This session will include a discussion of proper equipment maintenance, safe pesticide handling, and basic equations needed to assure proper herbicide coverage for targeted plants. 3:30 - Deliver CEU forms
