Hillsboro Asks Voters To Approve Measure To Fund Police, Fire, Parks

HILLSBORO, OR — There's a measure on the ballot for Hillsboro voters that the city very much wants residents to approve. It's pubic safety issue, according to officials. Measure 34-311 provides the bulk of the funding for the police, fire and parks departments by imposing what's called a "local option levy tax" on everyone who pays property tax in Hillsboro. The current measure adds a levy of $1.72 of every $1,000 of assessed value to people's bills. That rate, which was first approved in 2017, would be continued under the new measure. If passed, most of the money raised under the measure got to the police and fire departments as well as emergency medical services. What's left after that goes to help pay for park maintenance. Hillsboro officials said that while funding police and fire will always be a priority, if the measure doesn't pass, there will have to be service cuts at some point.
