Press release from the Fremont Police Department: May 12, 2022 Incident: Robbery/Elder Abuse in 2020 Report Number: 200706035 Location: Fremont, CA Media Contact: Lieutenant Ricardo Cortes Investigative Contact: Detective Jared Madsen On July 6, 2020, a 75-year-old Fremont resident/victim went to a bank located in Newark to withdraw money. After he completed the bank transaction, the victim drove back to his residence. Unbeknownst to the victim, three suspects in a white Chrysler 300 had watched the victim walk back to his vehicle in the bank parking lot. The suspects then followed the victim back to his residence. After the victim parked his vehicle in front of his residence, two suspects exited the white Chrysler 300 and violently assaulted the victim who had just exited his vehicle. During the violent assault, the suspects robbed the victim of his cash, jewelry, and cellular phone. Fremont Police Officers responded to the victim's residence and learned one of the suspects had touched the victim's clothing during the assault. Officers collected the victim's clothing for potential D.N.A. analysis. Fremont Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Unit assumed the investigation and learned a D.N.A. profile had been obtained from the victim's shirt. That D.N.A. profile led to the arrest of 22-year-old Hayward resident David Spears. David Spears has a lengthy criminal history including additional robbery cases in bank parking lots from neighboring jurisdictions. This case was presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office who charged Spears with felony robbery and felony elder abuse. Spears is currently in custody and awaiting future court dates.
