Essex County Jail Inmate Dies After 'Medical Distress,' Officials Say

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ -- An inmate at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark died after being transported to a hospital on Sunday, authorities said. According to Essex County officials, the 66-year-old inmate was experiencing "medical distress" that morning and was taken to University Hospital, where he passed away. Following procedures established by the Attorney General's Office, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the ECCF Internal Affairs Unit are investigating, although no foul play is suspected, officials said.
