Memphis Zoo Welcomes New Female Jaguar

Press release from the Memphis Zoo: May 13, 2022 We are excited to welcome Arizona, a very special female jaguar, to the Memphis Zoo. Arizona was born just over 9 years ago to mom Nayla at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Nayla is also mom to Inka, who just so happens to be Diego's mom. Diego is our male jaguar. Therefore, Arizona is Diego's aunt! Arizona is joining us from the San Antonio Zoo, where she lived most of her life so far. Arizona been a participant in the species survival plan (SSP) for jaguars as a loving mother to two cubs in 2016. Her cubs continue to contribute to the SSP at zoos across the country. Arizona has come to live at Memphis Zoo as a companion for Diego. Arizona is large for a female and looks a lot like Diego. You can definitely see the family resemblance! She is quite a bit darker than Diego and is generally more methodical and relaxed in how she moves around the exhibit. She is pretty easy going and settled in quickly once she arrived last month. She loves to eat and isn't picky about her food, but just like Diego she absolutely LOVES fish. She often gets mackerel or herring as a treat. At 9 years old, Arizona is not as playful or rambunctious as she probably used to be, and she tends to nap a lot. She does enjoy shredding cardboard boxes and will play with a boomer ball if she thinks no one is looking.
