Description

Join your friends from Lambda Living as we stroll through the historic Vizcaya Museum & Gardens We will meet at the entrance to Vizcaya at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 16th. Vizcaya’s story begins in 1910, less than 15 years after Miami was incorporated as a new city. The histories of the Estate and the city have been intertwined ever since. James Deering built Vizcaya as his winter home between 1914 and 1916, a time when America was emerging as an international economic and cultural force. By adapting European design traditions to a Miami context, Deering showed that America could compete with Europe, not only financially, but also culturally. In 1910 Deering hired Paul Chalfin (1874–1959) to advise on the creation of Vizcaya. Chalfin was involved in all aspects of Vizcaya’s design and is considered the artistic mastermind behind its creation. The July 1917 edition of Architectural Review was published the summer after James Deering moved into Vizcaya. In dedicating an entire edition to the Estate, the editors showed the importance of Vizcaya from its very beginnings. This international magazine, devoted to printing important work about the built environment, has been in continuous publication since 1896. There is so much more to know about Vizcaya. And if you join us, you will learn it!!
