Description

This event is a presentation and tour of Anne Arundel Community College's Health and Life Sciences Building 1.5 LU/HSW pending approval. Pre-registration is required. October, 2021 saw the opening of this state of the art, U.S. Green Building Council LEED gold certified science and environmental research center. The 175,000 square feet, 3 story building occupies 4 acres of the Arnold campus and contains state-of-the-art laboratories and instructional spaces. AIA Chesapeake Bay will be hosting a 1 ½ hour presentation of the design and tour of the building on Thursday, June 9, at 5:30 pm. Used to train future health care and environmental research professionals, the facility employs cutting edge technology in its science, biology, and aquaculture labs. Both the tour and presentations will focus on the sustainability aspects of the design as well as insight into the design process. Join us for an informative and enlightening evening, beginning with networking and refreshments at 5:30, followed by presentations by the Dean of the School of Health Science Elizabeth Appel and Director of Sustainability at SmithGroup design architect Greg Mella. A tour of the building, both inside and out, will conclude the program. Participants will learn: About both interior and exterior design methods that incorporate sustainable design featuresHow the design team worked with the end users to produce a building that fits their needs and accommodates the broad range of functions that are neededAdvantages of green design, for both building inhabitants and the community at largeAbout the LEED rating system and how it has changed the building design industry in the past 20 yearsSPEAKERS: Elizabeth Appel earned her B.S. degree from the University of Kansas and her M.S.W. degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore. She began her career in higher education at Anne Arundel Community College in 1999 as a professor and Department Chair of Human Services. In 2010, her administrative duties expanded as she was named the Department Chair of Health and Human Services. In this role she was responsible for the oversight of the Health, Fitness and Exercise Studies, Human Services, and Massage Therapy programs as well as the college’s fitness and aquatics operations. In 2016, Elizabeth became the Dean of the School of Health Sciences (SHS). In her tenure as dean, she has been instrumental in reorganizing SHS to increase administrative and instructional resources and efficiency, creating new health sciences programs that meet workforce need, increasing the number of students admitted to the nursing program by 56%, guiding programs through both the initial and re-accreditation processes, and successfully providing oversight of the completion of the design phase of the college’s new Health and Life Sciences Building (HLSB), which opened for instruction in August 2021. Greg Mella, FAIA, SmithGroup’s Director of Sustainable Design, is a pioneer and nationally recognized expert in sustainable design. Over the past 20 years, he has risen to become one of the nation’s leading authorities on a myriad of green design topics and initiatives, including net-zero energy design, rainwater harvesting and net-zero water design, resilient design, materials transparency, and energy metrics and benchmarking. Greg first gained national attention in 2000 as a visible advocate of sustainable design when he served as SmithGroup’s project architect for what would become the world’s first LEED Platinum building – the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, in Annapolis. Greg is a past member of the AIA Committee on the Environment Advisory Group and the AIA 2030 Commitment Working Group. ------------------ **Tour attendees will meet in the Lecture Hall (Room 100)** SPONSORSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE!
