Description

Start off your college career with the right tools in time management, faculty engagement, and study skills! The first semester in college is full of new and exciting experiences. If life isn't managed properly a bright freshman can arrive on campus in August with loads of potential but end up despondent with subpar grades or even an academic warning by Christmas. Scholarships are frequently lost during the first year and mental health issues can quickly and easily escalate when freshmen are ill-equipped to successfully transition into adulthood. This in-person, three-part workshop teaches practical principles and provides effective strategies in time management, faculty engagement, and mastery learning from great thought leaders such as Jordan B. Peterson, Stephen R. Covey, Carol Dweck, James Clear, Angela Lee Ducksworth, Sal Khan, Charles Duhigg, Daniel Pink, Kevin Paul, and more. These pragmatic skills can help freshmen successfully navigate their first year in higher education, avoid serious setbacks, and create a positive trajectory that can catapult their college career to exceptional achievement. Tues, Jul 26: Scheduling Your Priorities Learning how to effectively balance your time with competing priorities is imperative in college. This interactive workshop covers principles and strategies of time management to help freshmen prioritize and allocate their time and energy to what matters most to them. Tues, Aug 2: Engaging Effectively with Faculty Interacting with faculty can be intimidating and difficult for freshmen, especially in large classes with hundreds of students. This hands-on workshop will teach freshmen how to effectively and responsibly connect with their professors and teaching assistants in and out of the lecture halls as they learn the content of their courses. Tues, Aug 9: Studying Smarter, Not Harder The pursuit of excellence in higher education requires a higher level of scholarship and study than most high school standards. This intense workshop will overhaul poor study habits and equip freshmen with fundamental study skills that can help them succeed during their first year in college and beyond. The College Success Coach 4 You Noelani Porter is an adjunct faculty member of Student Development Services at BYU. She has taught "Effective Study + Learning" (STDEV 109) for over six years and she loves helping students create positive, meaningful, and sustainable change in their lives. Prior to her current faculty position, she directed the college advisement center of the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at BYU for several years advising hundreds of students through the opportunities and difficulties of higher education. She earned her Master's in Education Policy and Leadership. She is originally from Southern California and is an enthusiastic wife and a dedicated mom of four children. One of her favorite mottos is, "Start small and grow from there!" This workshop is unaffiliated with Brigham Young University and is a private enterprise. Substantial discounts (80% off) for the third workshop are available for attendees who register for the first two.
