University of Texas ecologist, Eric Pianka stated in a meeting of the Texas Academy of Science, that 90% of the world population must die in order to save the planet. Forrest M. Mims III, chairman of the Environmental Science Section of the Texas Academy of Science, as reported at the Citizen Scientist, "The earth as we know it will not survive without drastic measures". Without presenting any data he said that the only feasible solution to saving the earth, is to reduce the population to 10% of the present population number. His presentation included a slide show retorting the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War and Famine would not do, he explained. Disease offered the most efficient way of killing in the numbers that would be required. He went on to say in The Seguin Texas Gazette-Enterprise, "The earth would be better off with 90% of the world population dead". In a presentation at St. Edwards University, Eric Pinaka predicted that nature or perhaps humans will exterminate all but a fraction of civilization. Though his statements would be considered fringe, he is not without advocates. Humanities collapse is a notion that he embraces and smiles and jokes throughout his lecture. More recently Bill Gates has indicated that the population of the third world should be controlled by the use of vaccines, healthcare and reproductive services." If we do a really great job, we could lower the population by 10 or 15 percent". By Bill Gates own admission, reducing population growth has been a core mission of the Gates Foundation since its inception. To understand what Gates means by population control, we need to look beyond the concept of birth control. What Gates means is controlling the population itself. Some sites contradicting his statements as pure conjecture (PolitiFact) while others indicate, Bill Gates statements as well as others involved constitute a study of contradictions and assumptions, as well as a damning expose of racism that makes a mockery of the Human race. The New York meeting of billionaires, Gates, Buffet, Rockefeller, Soros, Turner, Oprah, Bloomburg and others, according to the Chronicles of Philanthropy was an informal gathering aimed at encouraging philanthropy. But an article in the Times of London headlined "Billionaire Club in Bid to Curb World Population", said top-secret discussions were of health care, education and world population control. Taking their que from Gates they agreed that overpopulation was a priority. Some blogs have indicated that these 1%er's have formed a kind of secret sterilization society. Accusing them of funding abortion groups and using their wealth to reshape society into what they believe it should be. Some are raising the specter of eugenics. Were this in the mid-20th century or in several authoritarian regimes around the world, state programs based on the forceful elimination of the weak from society are mostly associated with the Nazi regime. Forceful eugenics was adopted in China and even in the United States voluntary eugenics has been administered as planned parenthood. Iceland has developed screening technology to detect Down Syndrome by using a form of eugenics. This historic example is a sensitive one. Genetic engineering, which was in part designed by Jennifer Doudna, (UC Berkley) who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry went on to say, we have the potential to control our own human genetics with the possibility to create super humans. The real potential in the next few years is in genetic medicine. The Icelandic example, of detecting and removing genetic Traits through modification instead of termination, will soon become the norm. However, we need to fully understand the use of genetics in medicine and the evil we are trying to avoid when shaping the regulatory rules on how this technology is used. This indicates the potential for abuse and questions as to whether or not we can control the potential dangers of this possible abuse. The potential for population eradication is a consideration of great importance and can we keep the possible abuse to a minimum?
