RIVERSIDE, IL — Two deer were struck by cars late Tuesday night in Riverside, sending one driver to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The collisions happened about 11:30 p.m. on First Avenue at Parkview Road, just south of Riverside Brookfield High School, according to a Riverside police news release.
Once the first deer was struck, it was launched 20 feet into the air. A second car hit a second deer just after the first crash as the deer were crossing at the same time, police said. Police obtained videos from the first car's dashboard camera.
A driver and passenger in the first car were not hurt, but a 20-year-old woman from Westchester was injured and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.
According to State Farm Insurance, Illinois ranked 34th in the nation for deer-car accidents in 2019. A driver in the state had a 1-in-144 chance of having a collision with a deer in 2019, up from a 1-in-200 chance the year before.
"Deer activity and the likelihood of deer vehicle collisions increase between October through January during deer mating season," Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in a news release. "So, as we get closer to the end of the year, please be more aware of deer crossing roads, especially at night."
