Broward PEPSA conference Presenters: Essa Kennedy & Lori Goehrig Ms. Kennedy and Ms. Goehrig are speech-language pathologists with extensive experience in assistive technology. Hosted by: UM-NSU CARD Training Description Target Audience: Educators, Administrators, Paraprofessionals, Other School Personnel, Family Members Technology tools are all around us and have become part of our everyday routines, making life easier and more productive. For autistic individuals, technology can be powerful in supporting and enhancing independence. In this interactive workshop, participants will spend a “Day in the Life” of autistic individuals of varying age and ability levels to learn about useful technology tools for the academic, home, and community environments. The morning will be spent with an overview of ways technology builds independence. Focusing on a “Day in the Life” of our example individuals, the morning will continue with dozens of technology tools to support organization, math, reading and writing. The afternoon focuses on more technology tools to build independence at home with activities of daily living and in the community with an emphasis on social skills, navigation, and money management. Throughout the day, participants will build a personalized tech toolbox leaving the workshop with fresh ideas, new technology, and tried-and-true resources to support their work. Training Objectives Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Describe three ways that technology can positively impact the life of an autistic child, adolescent or young adult 2. List a variety of technology tools to increase independence in the academic, home & community environments 3. Explain how technology tools can support independence in autistic individuals
