Press release from Johnson City Public Library:
May 4, 2022
In November 2019, your Library's teen volunteers received an ETSU Elevates grant to host a weeklong program in Spring 2020 about teen mental health and stress management. However, "De-Stress Week" had to be put on hold in 2020 because of the pandemic.
JCPL teen volunteers had decided to focus their efforts on teen anxiety after discussing their own difficulties dealing with stress.
During their presentation at the ETSU Elevates Pitch Competition in November 2019, former volunteer Taryn shared, "We [teens] are so stressed out and we don't know how to cope. No one has taught us how."
Stress and anxiety are growing problems for teens. According to the National Institute of Health, nearly one in three adolescents will experience an anxiety disorder by the age of 18. (You can learn more about teen anxiety here.)
A Teen De-Stress Week is more important than ever, so we're holding it this May 16-21. Your Library will offer ongoing stress relief activities and several free de-stress events throughout the week.
