2 Dead After Fire Hits Worcester Triple Decker

WORCESTER, MA — Two people died and three more were injured early Saturday morning after a fire in a triple-decker home in the downtown Worcester area. The fire broke out in a six-family home near the corner of Gage Street and Eastern Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The fire grew to four alarms quickly after firefighters arrived, and firefighters were still working on controlling hot spots more than 12 hours later on Saturday afternoon, city officials said. The fire is the deadliest in Worcester since February 2021, when three people — Edna Mae Williams, Gerald Prince and Woodrow Adams Sr. — died in a fire in a multifamily home along Jaques Avenue. The 2 Gage St. home involved in Saturday's fire was a total loss, and buildings at 5 Eastern Ave. and 4 Gage St. were also damaged, displacing many residents. The Red Cross was working to rehome people affected by the fire. About 70 firefighters responded to the blaze, city officials said. "Our first responders gave a valiant effort this morning, working to stop the fire fromspreading, stabilizing the scene, providing emergency care on the scene, transportingvictims," said City Manage Ed Augustus Jr. said in a news release. "While we are deeply saddened by the loss of life, we are thankful to our public safety personnel for their selfless and professional response which prevented more damage and tragedy."
