Melodic bass for casual band Hi, wanted to get that “casual” thing out of the way first thing. I’m an employed parent, so I'm not really at the point in my life where I’m looking for world tours and 13 rehearsals a week. But music is and has been the center of my life for 30+ years, so I’m still making as much time as I can. Happy to do homework in order to maximize actual rehearsal time. Bass is my first instrument, and I’ve been playing since I was 16. But it’s been a while since I was the bassist in a band. I’ve been focused on my singer/songwriter stuff. But I pick up my bass often enough to still feel quite comfortable with it, and I’ve been using it in my quarantine recording projects. I really miss being in a band and in the role of supporting someone else’s writing! Tone-wise, I’m very much into a big round warm sound. I tend toward melodic playing, rather than just keeping time. I can play a bunch of notes, and I can also be quite happy playing a few choice notes and enjoying the sustain. I’d love to have space to do a spectrum of complexities. I’ve done everything from subdued root note-playing to finger-picked chords in a duo that’s just bass and vocals. It’s all about the song. I’m really happy to work a piece of music facet by facet. I’m not at all happy improvising or jamming. I like to carefully craft. As for myself, I believe I’m pretty easy going and patient. I’m in my late 40s, white/euro, agender, genderqueer, a snappy dresser. I’m more likely to want to share a pot of tea than a 6 pack, though I usually won’t say no to a whisky. So that’s me (it really bugs me when people write these ads and say only what they want and nothing about what they bring!) What I want: Well, the people are pretty important. Can’t make beautiful music with people you can’t enjoy. Beyond that, I do indeed like to play beautiful music. Not into angular, muscular, jangly stuff. Maybe something along the lines of The Sundays, Azure Ray, Mazzy Star, David Bridie, or certain eras of The Cure. Or Midnight Oil circa Earth and Sun and Moon. Or something with some groove so I can pretend I’m a funky Paul McCartney. I also enjoy a lot of singer/songwriter and other acoustic-based “folk” music. I like plenty of stuff from a Celtic background. If you’re familiar with Roddy Woomble or Nuala Kennedy, that’s what I love best. Generally not into the twangier side (country, old time, bluegrass, americana) though I do love banjo and mandolin, just not in that context. In fact, I love working with instruments outside of the western pop/rock paradigm. Vibraphone? Viola? GuZheng? Tanbur? HECK YES! Thanks for reading! Hope to hear from you soon.
