Songwriter looking for casual band collaborators Hi, wanted to get that “casual” thing out of the way first thing. I’m an employed parent, so I'm not really at the point in my life where I’m looking for world tours and 13 rehearsals a week. But music is and has been the center of my life for 30+ years, so I’m still making as much time as I can. Happy to do homework in order to maximize actual rehearsal time. Rehearsals once a week? Gigs once a month? Something like that. (I am quite serious about music, but more serious about being a parent and paying rent) I’ve been playing guitar and writing songs for over 30 years. And I think I’ve gotten fairly good at it. But I’ve never been interested in being a solo act. Collaboration is where the magic happens. Few things make me happier than being amazed by the ways other folks add things I never would have dreamed of to the framework of my songs. My style is a bit hard to categorize. I play guitar in a style somewhere between rhythm and lead. Some fingerpicking. Some palm-muting. Some strumming. Vaguely early Ani-DiFranco-esque, but less frenetic? Very few songs with standard verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge formats. I like to think my singing voice is a bit Nick Drake, though I’ve heard comparisons to Elliott Smith. My overall thing has been called folk, world-beat-ish, grunge unplugged, Celtic-adjacent, twee... I play guitar and nylon string banjitar. I also play bass (rather well) and drums/percussion (passably) if you have songs to add to the mix. As for myself personally, I believe I’m pretty easy going and patient. I’m in my late 40s, white/euro, agender, genderqueer, a snappy dresser. I’m more likely to want to share a pot of tea than a 6 pack, though I usually won’t say no to a whisky. So that’s me (it really bugs me when people write these ads and say only what they want and nothing about what they bring)! What I want: Well, the people are pretty important. Can’t make beautiful music with people you can’t enjoy. We’re likely to get along if you are relaxed, comfortable with queerness in general, and not inclined to say things like, “not all men/white people/etc”, or “all lives matter”. As to actual instruments I hope you play: Drums/percussion. Especially drum kit played as though it was a bunch of hand-drums. Lots of tom-textures, not just hanging out on the hi-hat all the time. (maybe like this: "Asturias" Parts 1 & 2", The Nuala Kennedy Band) I’ve also had great fun and success playing with someone with a hip-hop background. I love a groove. I’ve been a bassist longer than a guitarist, so always up for some low end: electric or acoustic bass guitar; upright bass; cello; marimba; reed contrabass? Maybe a “lead” instrument? I don’t mean noodly guitar histrionics. I mean another voice, another texture: banjo; mandolin; viola; violin; guzheng; harp; flute; pipes; oboe; vibraphone; oud; tanbur; ok, maybe even guitar ha ha... Harmony vocals! I’m lousy at creating them myself, but I love hearing them! Here are some links, mostly pandemic recordings augmented by GarageBand.
