Description

The Playback Experience and Westwood High School's “Let’s Talk About Race" committee will help the community look at itself through theater. SATURDAY, JUNE 18Saturday's performance and discussion will take place in the Andrew Cucchiara Learning Center field. Limited parking is available in the ACLC lot, and additional parking is available in the Cat Rock lot. Join us for a Playback Theatre performance followed by a discussion facilitated by members of Westwood High School's "Let's Talk About Race" committee. The Playback Experience is a local group of performers dedicated to offering communities a closer look at themselves through providing a space that combines storytelling and theater. Playback Theatre is a form of community improvisation during which audience members share real stories from their lives, then a team of trained actors and musicians enacts the stories on the spot. They highlight essences of narratives in ways that honor tellers' experiences, and shed light on how the audience creates and relates to contexts that affect individuals' experiences in the community. Playback provides an exhilarating and productive conversation about topics that may otherwise be too uncomfortable to explore. LTARaCE, Westwood High School's “Let’s Talk About Race” committee, strives to foster a racially aware and culturally sensitive environment in which students and faculty members can speak openly, honestly, and respectfully about race. By facilitating what can be difficult and sometimes uncomfortable conversations, it educates and empowers all members of the Westwood High School community to think critically about, and ultimately challenge, underlying stereotypes about race at WHS. “If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”—Lilla WatsonHale is glad to celebrate Juneteenth with support from the The Margaret Stewart Lindsay Foundation and in partnership with Inclusive Westwood; Westwood Public Schools Office of Equity, Integration, and Community Partnerships; and METCO Inc. Funding for Juneteenth events in particular is provided by METCO HQ in partnership with the Boston Summer Arts Institute and Outside the Box Act 2. From June 17–19, we'll observe the holiday with film, theater, music, poetry, dance, and more. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these events that commemorate the abolition of slavery and liberation of Black people in the United States. For Black participants, we hope it is a truly joyous experience! For participants of other races and backgrounds, we hope you will celebrate, reflect, and recommit to the work of ending racism in our society. Click here to learn more about why the manner in which we observe this holiday matters. While these events are free and open to the public, if you're willing and able to make a gift, we sincerely appreciate donations to support socially conscious art programs at Hale.
