BROOKFIELD, WI — Five Brookfield students were awarded $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as they move on to college, the company announced Wednesday.
The students were among 2,500 high school students across the United States chosen from a pool of 15,000 finalists, the company said in a statement. Students were judged on a combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors picked the scholars after looking at students' academic records, Preliminary SATs scores, contributions and leadership in school and community activities, a written essay from the finalist and a recommendation written by a high school official, the company said.
Three of the students were selected from public high schools, while two were selected from a private high school in Brookfield.
