BRADENTON, FL — Curbside recycling collection will end June 3 in Bradenton, according to the city's newsletter. Bradenton city commissioners voted unanimously to eliminate the program in March. In its place, the city will now offer 10 recycling convenience centers at the following locations throughout Bradenton: East end of San Ortebello Drive, adjacent to the elevated water tower100 22nd Street NE in the parking area adjacent to the city lift station1000 24th Street E., adjacent to the Dream CenterCordova Lakes dead end at 38th Avenue W./61st Street W.17th Avenue W. at the park at Wares Creek, adjacent to the lift stationLewis Park parking lot, 3120 1st Ave. W.9th Avenue W. between 63rd and 64th Street W. on the north side of the roadPalma Sola Causeway, 9800 SR 64 W., adjacent to solid waste dumpster28th Street W. Park at 2718 13th Ave. W. at the opening in the split-rail fenceRed Cross building loop road at 2905 59th Street W. The containers will have slots for cardboard and doors for other recyclables, the city said. Bradenton's curbside recycling program has faced numerous challenges, including "a debilitating lack of manpower and a staggering rate of residential recycling deemed 'contaminated,'" the city said in a news release. For months, a staffing shortage has impacted all garbage, yard waste and recycling pick-up in Bradenton. Without enough CDL drivers — an issue plaguing the industry across the country — the city was forced to alternate weekly yard waste and recycling pick-up starting in July. Recycled materials can also become contaminated when collections from separate houses are dumped in the same trucks and risk being sent to the landfill instead of processed at the recycling plant, the city said. City leaders hope that Bradenton will receive cleaner, uncontaminated goods at these centers. "We feel that this novel approach will actually help us to grow the level of clean recycling in our city," said City Administrator Rob Perry. "The goal is to help our citizens understand how to do to it correctly using our convenience centers. We believe this will be a largely successful effort."
