Description

Project 180 & Boxser Diversity Initiative present an exploration of the disease of addiction with implications for criminal justice reform. Addiction may be the most misunderstood disease of our time. A chronic brain disease, it causes intense craving and reduced executive decision-making functioning while incurring psychological dependency on one or more substances that advance the disease. Addiction as a disease--rather than as a condition dependent upon the will and determination of the individual--has been researched for forty years. Yet the knowledge gained from scientific research has yet to be widely applied in the criminal justice system in the state of Florida. The 2022 Strong Voices season--March 24, May 13, and September 23--will explore new research, the symptoms of the disease, life during active addiction, the transformative power of active recovery, and current efforts to take the disease of addiction into account in order to systemically reform our justice system.
