JAFFREY, NH — A hiker at Monadnock State Park suffered a medical emergency Thursday afternoon when he lost consciousness on the trail, officials said. Jerome Janisko, 82, was hiking the Old Half Way House Trail with his wife when he passed out and hit his head. Three good Samaritans stopped to help the couple contact first responders, the NH Fish and Game Department reported. With assistance from paramedics, Jasinko was later able to walk to the awaiting ambulance a quarter-mile away. He was taken to the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene at 4 p.m. for further evaluation. The NH Fish and Game Department said the event is a "good reminder" for anyone spending time outdoors to "dress appropriately, hike with a partner or group, and carry the necessary equipment."
