(CDC.com) Now let's transition to Garden Clubs and the Beautification Commission in Northville • Northville Garden Clubo The local Garden Club Branch of the Michigan Division of the National Farm and Garden Association first met on May 25, 1936.o The branch was sponsored by Mrs. Henry (Clara Bryant) Ford, who also served as national president from 1927 - 1934. Clara and Henry Ford spent their honeymoon in Northville in the 1880's and entertained family and friends here.o Historically, the branch provides local academic scholarships funded by flower shows (e.g., the WWII "Victory Garden Harvest & Flower Show" and the "Flowers, Fashion & Food Show" of the '60s).o In 1953, the branch instituted a Christmas sale and, in 1975, launched the Holiday Greens Mart, as we know it today.o In 1998, the branch name was changed to Northville Garden Club, and they celebrated their 80th anniversary in 2016. • Country Garden Club of Northvilleo The Country Garden branch of the Woman's National Farm & Garden Association was established in 1977.o The group is dedicated to community improvement through service, conservation and education.o This July 13, they will host their 28th annual Garden Walk. Proceeds from the event provide college scholarships to local high school students and support other environmental causes.o Members of the Club maintain beautiful gardens in many public spaces of Northville, such as the Post Office and the Friendship Garden at Township Hall. • Beautification Commissiono The Northville Beautification Commission was established in 1967 by the suggestion of Councilwoman Beatrice Carlson and has served the city faithfully since that time.o The commission encourages the planting and preservation of trees, flowers and shrubbery to improve the appearance of Northville. They plant and maintain several garden areas in town, participate in educational programs, and are a positive influence for the business community, residents and visitors. You can see with our topography of hills, water, and green spaces, we have a deep appreciation for our natural surroundings. The flowers, vegetation, and sustainability of this community over the years has been a high priority. Our garden club groups and the Beautification Commission have long played a big part in supporting Northville's natural splendor. Thank you for all you do to keep Northville GREEN (Go Spartys) and our waters BLUE (Go Blue). Let's keep our community engaged in gardening activities today and for the future, as we ready for our Bicentennial (2027) in the years to come. Keep that Northville Faith! Stay #NorthvilleStrong!Brian TurnbullMayor – [email protected] / 248.505.6849 This press release was produced by the City of Northville. The views expressed here are the author's own.
