DETROIT — A car split in half after a driver crashed into a pole Thursday morning in Detroit while fleeing police, Michigan State Police said.
State troopers said officers stopped the older Ford Taurus at 5:25 a.m. near Hampshire and Hayes streets for an improper plate. However, as the trooper approached the car, the driver sped off, police said.
The trooper did not pursue the car, but officers found the car destroyed shortly later on Hayes Road near Hampshire Street after it crashed into a pole, officials said.
Video showed the car split in half, with its front-end, including its front doors and engine compartment sitting in the front yard of a house on Hampshire Street. The rear-end of the car, including its rear wheels, trunk, passenger rear door were seen across the street in a parking lot.
After crashing the car, the driver ran away, as green light cameras showed the suspect running between houses, officials said.
Police tried tracking the driver with K-9 units, but they were unable to locate the suspect, officials said. Michigan State Police were still investigating the incident.
