WEST VILLAGE, NY — After nearly eight years in Albany, State Sen. Brad Hoylman is jumping into city politics, entering a competitive race for Manhattan borough president in 2021.
Hoylman, 54, represents much of Midtown, Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea and Greenwich Village. He is running to succeed term-limited Borough President Gale Brewer, joining a race that already includes Upper East Side City Councilman Ben Kallos and Uptown Councilman Mark Levine.
Elizabeth Caputo, a former Community Board 7 chair, has also filed paperwork to run but has not yet announced her bid.
"I'll be running on my record of accomplishments, and it's not just about press releases or sound bites or tweets, it's about getting things done and being a champion for the borough and providing a plan for the future," Hoylman told the New York Daily News after announcing his campaign Monday.
In the State Senate, Hoylman chairs the Judiciary Committee and has sponsored a number of progressive bills that later became law, including a statewide ban on conversion therapy for LGBT minors.
Hoylman, who lives with his husband and two daughters in Greenwich Village, would be the first openly gay president of any borough, City and State reported.
