WEST ISLIP, NY - A mix-up at a West Islip pet store led to the loss of a bird and a tragedy for one local family this week.
On Monday, B.T.J.'s Jungle on 144 Sunrise Highway reported that man walked out with a Quaker parrot that had just been groomed.
Later, Suffolk Police deemed the incident to be non-criminal, but did not provide any additional details.
The parrot, who was purchased as an emotional support animal, went in for grooming and was left on the counter while waiting for the owner to pick him up.
Unfortunately, a man unintentionally took the box with the bird, thinking it was a box of mice he ordered, and kept it in his car, according to a News12 report. By the time he opened the box, the parrot was sadly deceased.
Faris Furoogh, who brought the bird for his mother while she deals with a sickness, told News12 the loss of the parrot left an "emptiness in [their] hearts."
