Hamilton Wenham Garden Club's Annual Meeting and Members' Plant Swap followed by a workshop to review actionable tools against ticks. Does it feel like no matter where you go, you always seem to pick up ticks? Why are ticks so much worse these days than “back in the old days?” Ticks are a re-emerging threat to human health. There are currently three known species of human biting ticks carrying 10 different diseases. And, there may be more ticks and diseases flying under the radar. Understanding tick biology holds the key to preventing disease. Many people know something about ticks, but misinformation may leave them vulnerable. Knowing the right information is critical. When it comes to ticks and their diseases, the key is awareness, not fear. In our workshop we will review science-based information to provide actionable tools you can rely on: -Tick biology -Trends in tick ecology -Disease epidemiology -Personal protection methods -Landscape design -Pet protection Blake Dinius graduated with a degree in Biology from University of Massachusetts – Boston. Soon after, he began a 7-year career in insect research where he directed studies on bees, lacewings, springtails, earthworms, and other critters. He helped to develop guidelines and practices that are currently being used world-wide in the world of ecotoxicology. As an extension educator, Blake serves his community by delivering science-based education in the form of actionable items – information that you can put into practice and rely on. When it comes to ticks and their diseases, the key is awareness, not fear. As an avid angler, camper, and hiker, he believes New Englanders should enjoy the outdoors. With the right knowledge and tools, all tick-borne diseases are preventable. This event is free for Hamilton Wenham Garden Club members. It is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10. Please note that prior to the start of the program, the membership will conduct our Annual Meeting and Members' Plant Swap. (Members--please bring plants to swap!)
