Find yourself a best friend, long distance swimming in the rivers of the UK? The Whole Body is a celebration of the universal instinct to get outside and connect with Mother Earth no matter the challenges life presents. May 14 – Hamon Hall – 4:15pm Short Film: ALL BODIES ON BIKES (dir. Zeppelin Zeerip) Runtime: 14min Year: 2021 Kailey Kornhauser and Marley Blonsky are on a mission to change the idea that people in larger bodies can't ride bikes. The duo aims to make cycling more inclusive, beyond just inviting people of all sizes to ride bikes, by changing the idea of what it means to be a cyclist. Meet the Director: Zeppelin Zeerip tells stories that matter because he cares more about impact than “content.” Zeerip plays kickball on Tuesdays, runs marathons on Wednesdays, and lobbies his legislators on Thursday, because these are all important things. Short Film: THE LAST LAST HIKE (dir. Céline François) Runtime: 20min Year: 2019 After being diagnosed with autism at age 11, Alfie Bowen was bullied constantly throughout school, which resulted in suicide attempts and psychosis. Through his love for animals and passion for photography, Alfie discovered a way to deal with the darkness. An Eye For Detail explores how nature and art can become not only an outlet for those living with disabilities, but a therapy for people struggling from mental illness. Meet the Director: Céline François developed her passion for storytelling through film at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, where she graduated with a BFA in Documentary. François hopes to spend her career uplifting key voices and highlighting authentic stories that showcase our collective humanity and relationship to the world in which we live. Short Film: FROM MY WINDOW (dir. Frank Pickell) Runtime: 19min Year: 2021 From her bedroom window, Melissa Simpson looks out at the highest peaks in Colorado. Despite being so close, the mountains have always been worlds away for Melissa, who was born with cerebral palsy. With the help of her friend and mentor, blind adventurer Erik Weihenmayer, Melissa sets out to conquer something far greater than a summit. Through humility and grace, Melissa proves that what is within us is stronger than what's in our way. Meet the Director: Frank Pickell is an award-winning director and cinematographer. An affinity for the great outdoors, mixed with an eye for photography, led Pickell to adventure documentary filmmaking early in life. Pickell is a co-founder of Futuristic Films, based in Denver, Colorado. Short Film: BREAKING TRAIL (dir. Jesse Roesler) Runtime: 30min Year: 2021 Emily Ford sets out with Diggins, a borrowed Alaskan Husky sled dog, to become the first woman and person of color to thru-hike the 1,200-mile Ice Age Trail in winter. As the 69-day journey through subzero temperatures tests her physical and mental endurance, Emily and her canine protector develop an unbreakable bond as they discover they’ve become figureheads in the movement to make the outdoors more accessible for everyone. Meet the Director: Jesse Roesler is an Emmy and James Beard award-winning filmmaker whose work has moved millions via The Travel Channel, Food Network and The New York Times. Roesler’s debut feature film The Starfish Throwers was named “The Most Heartwarming Film of the Year” by The Huffington Post and won the James Beard Award for Best Documentary in 2016. Short Film: CHASING THE SUBLIME (dir. Amanda Bluglass) Runtime: 4min Year: 2018 Chasing the Sublime is a poetic glimpse of the physicality of cold water swimming in the United Kingdom. This visually stunning short follows the originators of The Outdoor Swimming Society, ‘swim twins’ Kate Rew and Kari Furre, as the two friends set out to chase the sublime. Meet the Director: Amanda Bluglass is a British filmmaker who specializes in character-led documentaries. A former journalist who is in love with moving images and beautiful soundtracks, her films are a combination of compelling narratives married with beautiful visuals. www.earthxfilmfestival.org
