Description

FREE ARCHAEOLOGY LECTURE! Catawba Ancestors and the First European Settlement in North Carolina Dr. David Moore, archaeologist at Warren Wilson College and the Senior Archaeologist for the Exploring Joara Foundation, will describe the archaeological excavations at the Berry Site, near Morganton, NC. The Berry Site is the location of the sixteenth-century Native American town of Joara and the Spanish Fort San Juan, built in 1567, the first European settlement in North Carolina. Using slides to tell the story, Dr. Moore will talk about the Native Americans living in the Catawba Valley before the Spanish soldiers arrived, and he will detail the enormous changes that occurred in the valley over the next 150 years.
