Deep south queerceañera - a queer take on the traditional quinceañera. During Pride Month, IAJE, one of the few Latinx led organizations in Mississippi, is hosting a queer dance party Latinx-style. In Mexican and other Latino cultures, the quinceañera is a celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday that carries religious overtones and is considered a rite of passage that marks a girl’s transition from childhood to young womanhood. This is very patriarchal and binary. There’s an inherent erasure of queer, trans and gender nonconforming people in traditional celebrations like quinceañeras. This event will point the limelight on the LGBTQ community and allow our Person of Honor to reclaim that rite of passage as a queer or trans person who represents the best queer and trans Latinx organizing has to offer. This year our person of honor will be Li Ann Sanchez.
