Description
The Pittsburgh APRI Gala is back! Join us as we celebrate five individuals who exemplify the mission of Asa Philip Randolph. Asa Philip Randolph was a labor organizer and one of the most influential political strategists of the twentieth century. His belief in organized labor’s ability to counter workforce discrimination and his skill in planning non-violent protests helped gain employment advancements for African Americans. A. Philip Randolph organized and founded the first major Black labor union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) in 1925. In the 1930s, his organizing efforts helped end both racial discrimination in defense industries and segregation in the U.S. armed forces. Randolph was also a principal organizer of the March on Washington in 1963, which paved the way for the passage of the Civil Rights Act the following year. Today, the Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute continues to advance A. Philip Randolph mission through the Breaking the Chains of Poverty (BTCP) Workforce development program connects minority, previously incarcerated, and low-income individuals to careers in the building and construction trades, manufacturing, and energy sector. Join Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute as we celebrate the students and success of the Breaking the Chains of Poverty program, and celebrate five dynamic individuals who exemplify the values of Asa Philip Randolph.
