WOODBRIDGE, NJ — It took firefighters nearly four hours to extinguish a fire in a dust collector compactor in Port Reading Wednesday afternoon.
The fire occurred on E. Essex Avenue, an industrial section of town.

Earlier this week, there were two separate but both very large garbage fires in industrial sections of Elizabeth and New Brunswick; the Elizabeth fire rose to five-alarm status and a man who worked there was killed in that fire.
In Port Reading, crews arrived to find smoke coming from the top of the compactor with high heat readings, said the Woodbridge Fire Department. In the middle of fighting the fire, as crews were removing some of the debris inside, the fire flashed out the bottom of the compactor and ran all the way up to the top of the unit and against the building.
Crews knocked it down quickly and prevented any extension to the building.
Firefighters from Port Reading, Avenel, Fords, Perth Amboy and Colonia along with Middlesex County Hazmat were on the scene.
