FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A motorcyclist died in a crash on Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg on Thursday morning. The Fredericksburg Police Department said officers notified the motorcyclist's next of kin, but they have not publicly released his name.
Lafayette Boulevard was shut down for about five hours on Thursday morning as police officers conducted an investigation.
The crash occurred around 1 a.m. on Thursday, police said. At that time, officers responded to the scene of the crash in the 1300 block of Lafayette Boulevard.
Investigators determined that a motorcycle was speeding northbound on Lafayette Boulevard. The driver of the motorcycle struck a car and went around it before speeding down the hill, according to the police department.
Police said that the motorcyclist then lost control, went off the road, and struck the National Park Service sign. The collision threw him from the motorcycle, according to investigators. First responders said he died at the scene.
Authorities said they would release the motorcyclist's name at a later time. They also noted that there were no other injuries reported in the crash.
