MORRISTOWN, NJ — Two students from Morristown High School have been named National Merit Scholarship winners. Shivani Vel and Milind Bangalore were chosen as 2022 National Scholarship Program finalists from among 15,000 applicants. Vel intends to pursue a career in pediatrics, whereas Bangalore intends to pursue a career in computer science. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, "National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies." The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the percentage of graduating high school seniors in that state. To become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. Starting last month, approximately 7,500 students were notified that they have been chosen for a Merit Scholarship. Many will receive a $2,500 scholarship for college, but some may win an award from a company or from a particular college. Recipients can use their scholarships at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. Thank you for reading! Have a news tip, correction or comment? Email [email protected].
