Description

BETHEL, CT — Emergency workers from Bethel and the surrounding area came to the rescue of a worker trapped in a trench after it collapsed on Wednesday afternoon. Around 1:07 p.m., Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company and Bethel volunteer firefighters were alerted to the collapse that had occurred on Budd Drive. Bethel crews contacted the Danbury Fire Department, requesting assistance from its technical rescue team and trench rescue trailer. First responders found a worker up to his chin in dirt, trapped in a hole approximately 13-15 deep, according to a SHVFC report. Crews worked to shore up the hole to prevent further collapse, removing the dirt by hand to free the worker. A vacuum truck from Danbury Public Works was called in to assist with the dirt removal. After being trapped for approximately two-and-a-half hours, the worker was taken to Rubino Field on Hawleyville Road, where he was air lifted to Yale New Haven Hospital on the advice of doctors at Danbury Hospital.
