By John Gibson, WNIN May 12, 2022 The Vanderburgh County Coroner has confirmed that Alabama corrections officer Vicky White killed herself. Coroner Steve Lockyear ruled that White died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, following an autopsy on Tuesday. He said the manner of death was suicide. White shot herself after police crashed into a car she was driving with fugitive Casey White in the passenger seat. The convicted felon surrendered without further incident at Highway 41 and Baumgart Road on Monday. Vicky White later died at a hospital. She was accused of helping Casey White – no relation – escape from an Alabama prison in late April. Authorities said they had stopped in Evansville and were staying at a motel on Highway 41, just a short distance from the sheriff's office. A pickup truck they were driving during their getaway was spotted at a Southeast Side car wash more than a week before Monday's capture. During a Tuesday news conference, Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin defended the length of time it took to connect the truck to the fugitives: "There was no tie at all to this being involved with anything out of state. There was no mention to it being connected with them. So, it was just an abandoned vehicle for us at that point." Sheriff Dave Wedding said Casey White waived extradition and he's been returned to Alabama. WNIN is the NPR/PBS affiliate in Evansville, Indiana.
