WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – The news of the retirement of Western Springs' deputy police chief apparently reached the Village Board more than a week later. Deputy Chief Daniel Albrecht retired May 1. On Monday, Patch inquired about Albrecht's departure. The village said it would release a statement soon; it did so hours later. At the board meeting that night, Trustee Lewis, chairman of the board's public health and safety committee, noted the development. He referred to the retirement as "breaking news," even though it was eight days after Albrecht's last day. "We learned today that Deputy Chief Dan Albrecht has retired after more than 22 years of service to the village," he said. "We wish him well and thank him for all his service through the years." Village President Alice Gallagher said, "He will be greatly missed, but we do appreciate all of his service throughout the years." It was unclear when Albrecht notified the village of his retirement. Earlier this week, Patch filed a public records request for his resignation letter. Village spokeswoman Selmin Cicek said the village doesn't comment on personnel matters. Police Chief Brian Budds has not returned a message for comment from Monday. In the news release Monday, the village listed the positions that Albrecht held with the police department. Then the release stated, "The Village congratulates him on his retirement and wishes him well."
