PLAINFIELD, IL — With Memorial Day a couple of weeks out, Plainfield police are getting ready to start their "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign. Starting Friday and lasting through May 31, Plainfield police will be reminding drivers to buckle up because seat belts "save lives every day, but they're only effective if they're used." The campaign, according to a news release Thursday, will focus on safety education and law enforcement support. Currently in Illinois, the seat belt compliance rate is 93.5 percent, and unbelted car occupants account for more than half of those killed in car crashes, according to police. Officers said wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of a fatal injury by about 45 percent. "Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends," police said in a news release Thursday. "Whether you are traveling down the block or across the country, make sure you buckle up every time." The campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation using federal highway safety funds.
