CHICAGO — About 2,200 readers responded to Patch's opinion poll regarding the top issue in the governor's race. We asked readers if a candidate's position on abortion would be a determining factor in their vote for governor. Nearly 4 in 10 of poll respondents indicated they would not vote for a candidate who disagrees with them on abortion. However, only about 12 percent of poll-takers considered it the most important issue in the governor's race, and two-thirds of those responses indicated they would only support candidates who believe abortion should stay legal in Illinois. More than 70 percent of poll respondents ranked violent crime, economic recovery and property taxes as the top three issues in the campaign for governor. About 3 percent of survey respondents indicated the state's coronavirus response was a top issue. Issues of extreme poverty and education funding received 2.4 and 2 percent of the poll vote respectively.
