City Of Batavia Is Offering Youth Preparedness Classes

BATAVIA, IL — In an effort to teach students the differences between an emergency, a disaster and a hazard, the City of Batavia is offering two Youth Emergency and Disaster Preparedness classes. A class for students in grades 1 through 3 will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. June 4, and one for students in grades 4 through 8 will take place later that day from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Both classes will be held at the City of Batavia Municipal Center, 100 N. Island Ave. During the classes, students will also learn what types of emergencies to be prepared for, what protective actions to take and what to do during severe weather. Different family emergency communication plans, disaster supply kits, Go Bags and gun safety will also be discussed, according to a Thursday news release. A First Aid/CPR instructor will also be present during the classes to teach age-appropriate basic first aid, including phoning for help, when to call 911, and stopping bleeding and choking, among other things. The class will end with each student receiving a Go Bag and taking a tour of the Municipal Center. "The classes are not intended to scare kids, but rather age-appropriate, fun, and educational to build confidence and empower them to be prepared," officials said.
