Covering the 1980s' most notable songs has been an aspect in musicians ads for some time. I've noticed over just the last few years that covering hits from the 1990s has been in demand.
I always thought the late 1990s up to about 2010 was a heck of an era for rock. Off hand, I can't say there were THAT many memorable bands w/ legendary albums, but there were A LOT of great songs, from 'one hit wonders', if you will. Or, a band would have 2 or 3 good singles from an album, then not a peep from them after that.
Of course, some bands were beyond 'one hit wonders' and/or are still around - the Foos, Godsmack, 311 still gets played, etc.
But I'm pretty much talking about "X Music" that 105.9 would play back then. Sure, these people weren't impresarios at guitar and music, like Yes, Zeppelin (Page), and so on, but they could deliver in a great 3 1/2 minute rock song!
examples: Crossfade, "Cold"
Stabbing Westward - "Shame", two other notable hits
Cold, "No One"
Dark New Day, "Free"
Adema, "The Way You Like It"
Taproot, "Poem"
etc.....where are the fans of this music these days? maybe they are out there, but are doing metal. at the time, these songs weren't 'metal', but its likely people who are influenced by that era and that music have gravitated to a more metal approach.
just my musings....but that 15-yr period was just amazing - a parade of great alt-rock radio hits. and hell, I like country and so many other things, but that period and its music will always be my favorite.
