Port Washington Native Earns College Lacrosse Honors In Virginia

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — A Port Washington native has been recognized as one of the top university lacrosse players in Virginia. Arden Tierney, a freshman playing for the University of Richmond Spiders, was one of 12 players in the state to earn first team honors by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. The organization announced the news Monday night. Tierney's coach Allison Kwolek also earned coach of the year honors. The Spiders started the year with a scorching 7-0 record start and beat Virginia for the first time since 2006 when the Cavaliers were ranked No. 6. At the end of the season, Richmond finished the season nationally ranked in all three polls and jumped into the top-20 for the first time since 2008. Tierney went to high school at Sacred Heart Academy, a private, all-girl, Catholic school in Hempstead, where she was a two-year varsity captain. She was ranked the 27th best incoming freshman in the Inside Lacrosse Power 100 rankings prior to the season. As a freshman, she led the Spiders with 24 goals and was second in points with 34. Tierney also ranked second in goals in the country among all freshman. Caitlin Anderson, a senior defender at Washington and Lee University, who went to high school in Manhasset, earned player of the year and first team honors in the Virginia organization's women's lacrosse college division. Anderson led the Generals with 34 draw controls, 24 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers.
