PORT WASHINGTON, NY — A farmers market in Port Washington has been extended, organizers announced Friday. The Facebook page for Port Washington Farmers' Market said the market will continue three weeks into November, with the final day held Saturday, Nov. 21, making it "perfect for stocking up on the best local organic veggies for Thanksgiving dinner and choosing special gifts for the holidays," organizers said. Additional artisans will be invited to the market for those weeks to more variety to the market and offer more items for potential gifts. The market bills itself as the only 100-percent organic farmers' market in the state, with farmers from as far away as the East End of Long Island bringing truckloads of fresh veggies and baked goods. The 2020 season began June 13 due to the coronavirus pandemic and had been slated to run until Halloween. This year, attendees were asked to wear masks, use hand sanitizer upon entering and socially distance from others. The market is typically held Saturday mornings over the summer and into the fall. It was founded and managed by Grassroots Environmental Education, an environmental health nonprofit based in Port Washington. The market is anchored by two certified organic farms: The Golden Earthworm Farm from Jamesport and Orient Organics of Orient Point. Other vendors include purveyors of fish, pasta, flowers, bread, olive oil, honey, gluten-free baked goods, and other artisanal food and personal care items.
