Description

Port Washington, New York (November 2020)—A newly implemented initiative in the Port Washington Union Free School District (PWUFSD), Project Lead the Way, is a science-based program that encourages students to supplement their scientific interests with hands-on experiences. In doing so, students at Manorhaven Elementary School have fostered their scientific learning through understanding the design process—ask, explore, model, evaluate, and explain—with each of their lessons as an avenue for understanding discovery and analysis. Recently, third grade teacher at Manorhaven Elementary School, Mrs. Guarneri, introduced students to forces, as well as simple and compound machinery, through the unit Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions. Throughout this unit, students constructed wheels and axles, inclined planes, levers and pulleys. Ms. Guarneri's class will culminate their hands-on learning with a project, displaying their understanding of the scientific topic. Project Lead the Way offers Port Washington's students the opportunity to expand their scientific knowledge through instruction which focuses on solving real-life problems that students would expect to face in this profession. Each unit begins by learning about a problem, creating a solution with materials provided, and completing a project to showcase what was learned throughout the module.
