PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2020)—Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington virtually welcomed the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County for its first virtual assembly program, "Deconstructing Symbols of Hate." Over the course of two days, students in each grade level attended the virtual assembly to learn about the significance of tolerance in the face of hateful action and rhetoric. "As educators and role models, our district has a zero-tolerance policy for offensive sentiments. Our staff work diligently to place a strong emphasis on providing our students with a platform to understand the values of inclusion about the impacts of hate language or symbols," said Dr. Michael Hynes, superintendent of schools. "The unconscionable act that took place in early October at the PAL clubhouse was reprehensible. It doesn't matter if you are a student, educator, family member or business owner - we all have an important role to play in combating bias and bullying as a means to stop the escalation of hate. From our schools, from our homes, and from everywhere else in our town, we will combat this together." With guidance from the Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center, students focused on expanding their understanding for people from various cultures and backgrounds. Symbols of hate were the focal point of the discussion, highlighting how students can practice tolerance as a way to resist hateful rhetoric and action.
