PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Port Washington voters made history Tuesday night, electing the first black commissioner to the Port Washington Police District board. Brian Staley declared victory over incumbent Commissioner Tom Rice. In a video posted to Staley's Facebook campaign page, Staley thanked his supporters. "I promise you I'm going to hear your voice and do the best for the police department and this community," he said. A Facebook message seeking comment from Staley wasn't immediately returned. Rice told Patch in a phone interview he conceded the race and congratulated Staley on his win. "Brian did a great job. I wish him nothing but the best," Rice said. The ballots were ratified Tuesday night immediately following the election. Rice confirmed Staley will become the department's first black commissioner on Jan. 1. While the official results weren't immediately available, he estimated the total was about 713 to about 400. When asked what's next, Rice said he plans to enjoy spending time with his grandchildren and helping out at local food pantries. "I just want to thank the community for trusting me the last three years," he said, adding he "could not be any prouder" of his three chiefs.
