PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Six Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students were nominated for a Teeny Award, a recognition from the East End Arts Council, an organization that has been recognizing and celebrating excellence in high school theater for almost two decades, the Port Jefferson School District announced in a news release. This is the first time Port Jefferson has been invited to enter into the awards, making the nominations not only a point of pride for the district, but a historic moment for the high school's drama program. Liam Sproul was nominated in the category of Lead Male in a Play for his role of Cassiusin the school's fall drama production of "Julius Caesar," adapted by theater director AnthonyButera. Jade McGarrity performed the role of Portia in the same production and is nominatedas Supporting Female in a Play. Both Liam and Jade are each competing with six actors fromSuffolk County schools for the first-place honors. "Julius Caesar" also produced four nominations in the Technical Recognition categories– Carley Davidson and Jack Worrell for stage managers and Dylan Dugourd and RyanParmegiani for Lighting Design and Crew. Dylan was also cited for his unique special technicaleffects for the show. "This is such a great achievement for these students, using the skills they possess on thestage and as part of the crew is a testament to the commitment they all have for theater," Butera said. "They really embraced their roles in this production and are all exceptional students to work with. We all congratulate and wish them all well at the ceremony." In a virtual program scheduled for late July, esteemed community members, theatreprofessionals and arts supporters will honor students in multiple categories including lead andsupporting actors and actresses, student choreographers, poster and playbill designers,outstanding performers, design and technical categories and pit orchestra.
