Description
Sibshops are recreation-based, peer-centered support groups for children, aged 8-13, who have a brother or sister with complex health needs. At this Sibshop, sibs will enjoy a tour of the new Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center hospital- complete with viewing some cool projects during a tour of the medical lab! Note: Due to the time frame, there will not be lunch provided at this Sibshop. Thank you for your understanding. Sibshops are recreation-based, peer-centered support groups for children, aged 8-13, who have a brother or sister with complex health needs, mental health concerns, and/or developmental disabilities. They allow siblings an event just for them, to connect with other children who share their experience, as well as enjoy a respite from the day-to-day of their sibling's more focused care. While Sibshops are intended for typically-developed siblings, we are aware that siblings of kids with special health care needs often have disabilities of their own, while also sharing a similar experience to that of their typically-developed Sib peers in the face of their sibling's more intensive needs. These Siblings are invited to attend our event, to be held in-person on July 13th, 2022. Goals of the Sibshop Project: Sibshops will provide brothers and sisters of children with special needs an opportunity to meet other siblings in a relaxed, recreational setting.Sibshops will provide brothers and sisters with opportunities to discuss common joy and concerns with other siblings of children with special needs.Sibshops will provide brothers and sisters with an opportunity to learn how others handle situations commonly experienced by siblings of children with special needs.Sibshops will provide siblings with an opportunity to learn more about the implications of their brother's and sister's special needs.Sibshops will provide parents and other professionals with opportunities to learn more about the concerns and opportunities frequently experienced by brothers and sisters of people with special needs. If you would like to find out if your child is eligible to attend a Sibshop, have further questions/concerns, or would like more information about this Sibshop, please contact our Sibshop facilitator, Diana Rovetti, at [email protected].
