FALMOUTH, MA — A man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend in Falmouth before initiating an hours-long armed standoff with police Tuesday has been ordered to be held without bail. Tyler Gibbs, 23, has been charged with murder in the death of Kianna Paige Barrows, 20. Court documents show that a woman called 911 just before 4 p.m. saying her niece had been shot at 49 Old Mill Road. Once officers arrived at the scene, they say they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the head in a bedroom upstairs, and a man was outside the home with a gun, Cape and Island District Attorney Michael O'Keefe confirmed. O'Keefe later identified the woman as Kianna Barrows, 21. According to O'Keefe, Barrows lived inside the home, but Gibbs did not. Court documents also indicate that Gibbs is Barrows' ex-boyfriend. Barrows was pronounced dead at the scene. After almost three hours, SWAT team negotiators and officers were able to intervene with Gibbs, who police say put a gun on the ground and walked towards law enforcement with his hands up. Police were able to arrest him without incident. North Falmouth Elementary School was forced into lockdown just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, prompting a huge police presence and what officers called a "very active" scene while releasing little information. Gibbs is also being charged with assault to murder with a firearm, and having a firearm without an FID card. Gibbs is expected to return to court on June 22.
