WAUKESHA, WI — A Waukesha teacher was awarded on Saturday for creating a safer environment for LGBTQ+ students in the classroom.
Greta Voit, a science teacher at Waukesha North High School, was awarded as GSAFE's Educator of the Year at an event in Madison on Saturday.
She was a long-time Gay-Straight Alliance organizer, was awarded the Kohl Teacher Fellowship in 2016 and worked with a team to develop the Waukesha Community Equity Team.
"As an educator, I recognize that creating a safe learning environment is critical in allowing students to thrive as learners and individuals," Voit told Patch. She saw the effect of ensuring students were seen, respected and given space to express themselves authentically, she added.
The teacher planned to continue to create a school community where every student had a sense of belonging and could find academic success, Voit said.
"Ms. Voit is an example of our teachers being great educators and caring for all students," the School District of Waukesha said in a statement.
