WAUKESHA, WI — Waukesha County residents returned 6,054 pounds of over-the-counter medication as part of National Drug Take-Back Day, Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson announced Tuesday.
Wisconsin raked in 59,840 pounds of unwanted prescription pills, patches, and vials on April 30, Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a statement. Residents returned nearly a tenth of the total number of returned drugs in 18 municipalities within Waukesha County, sheriff's office data showed.
"Drug take back events provide a safe and convenient method for our communities to dispose of unwanted and/or unused medication," Severson said. "They also serve as a mechanism to educate the community about the potential abuse and consequences of improper storage and disposal of prescription medications."
Retailers Pick 'N Save and Meijer also offered to take old prescription drugs for the take-back day. People who missed the take-back day can return their drugs at permanent drop-boxes around Wisconsin.
