Description

Join Save the Dunes as we celebrate 70 Years of progress with food, music, and a hike at the site of one of our earliest victories! Save the Dunes is Turning 70 - Come Celebrate With Us!History: On June 21st, 1952, Dorothy Buell and a group of local advocates formed the Save the Dunes Council to protect the remaining untouched sand dunes on the southern shores of Lake Michigan from threats of further development. 70 years later, while our work may look a bit different, we proudly continue the work of our founders to protect and advocate for the Indiana dunes! One of Save the Dunes' earliest victories was the acquisition of 56 acres of Cowles Bog at the Porter County tax sale in 1953. This property, purchased for a total of $1,730, would later become a part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (now National Park), and would stand as one of the premier examples of the incredible biodiversity found in our region. Logistics: To celebrate 70 years of Save the Dunes, we are holding a gathering at Chellberg Farm in the Indiana Dunes National Park, and will be offering a shuttle to Cowles Bog for a one mile ranger-led hike to our first 75 registrants. Additional registrants will be invited to join a ranger-led hike at Chellberg Farm, explore the Chellberg Farm farmhouse, or simply enjoy the evening with fellow Save the Dunes supporters. We will have live music from Save the Tunes, food trucks where you can purchase some tasty treats, and an evening full of good company and celebration! We can not wait to see you there! Registration is required for this free event so that we can plan for hike logistics. If you would like to make a donation to Save the Dunes in honor of our anniversary, or to support the work we will undertake during the next 70 years, please visit our Donations Page. To stay connected with us and learn about our work and the other events we have planned for our 70th Anniversary, you can sign-up for our monthly eNewsletter. *Indiana Dunes National Park entrance fees will be waived to all registrants of this event for access to Chellberg Farm and Cowles Bog during event hours.* *Rain Date: Tuesday, June 28th, 5:30-8:00pm CST* Established in 1952, the mission of Save the Dunes is to protect and advocate for the Indiana dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding natural areas for the betterment of the environment and the people who live, work, and recreate in Northwest Indiana.
